By Amy Nutt
What is Nofollow?
Nofollow is an html attribute first introduced in 2005 by Google. Originally, the rel=”nofollow” attribute was added to discourage comment spam in blogs. Links with nofollow should not influence the link target’s ranking in the search engine.

By Amy Nutt

What is Nofollow?

Nofollow is an html attribute first introduced in 2005 by Google. Originally, the rel=”nofollow” attribute was added to discourage comment spam in blogs. Links with nofollow should not influence the link target’s ranking in the search engine.

From the Google Blog:

From now on, when Google sees the attribute (rel=”nofollow”) on hyperlinks, those links won’t get any credit when we rank websites in our search results. This isn’t a negative vote for the site where the comment was posted; it’s just a way to make sure that spammers get no benefit from abusing public areas like blog comments, trackbacks, and referrer lists.

From Google Answers:

“Nofollow” provides a way for webmasters to tell search engines “Don’t follow links on this page” or “Don’t follow this specific link.”

So the rel=”nofollow” attribute is a tool that can help define your most important links to the search engines.

Search Engines that support nofollow: Google, MSN Search and Yahoo!

History of Nofollow

Originally, the nofollow attribute was used on the page-level with a meta tag. It instructed search engines not to follow (crawl) outgoing links on a page. See the original post for an example.

Another way to tell search engines not to follow (crawl) pages was to include them in a robots.txt file. But it was more difficult to prevent robots from following individual links on a link by link basis. The rel=”nofollow” attribute allows webmasters to easily instruct the search engine robot to not crawl a link.

How to Spot Nofollow Links?

You can install browser plugins, or edits to Chrome to show a highlighted color over nofollow links. You can also install a plugin to your blogging software.

Nofollow Implications

Links are now either dofollow or nofollow. From the perspective of building links to your site or blog, dofollow links will always give you more link juice. While nofollow links won’t either harm or help your link building. With that said, how you decide to build links with respect to the nofollow attribute (whether you want to get ONLY dofollow links or both to create a more natural array of links) will be an individual choice. How to use nofollow in link building strategy is a discussion for my next post!

Nofollow FAQs

How Do I Remove Nofollow?

1. Browser Plugins - highlights all links which are nofollow

- Chrome extension - add text to ChromEdit and follow directions
- FireFox has a version of the ChromEdit called ChromeEdit Plus
- Firefox plugin - SEO for Firefox

2. Blog Plugins

Wordpress Nofollow Plugins:

- Lucia’s Linky Love - Rewards frequent commenters, you can set how many comments must have been made to be awarded a dofollow link.
- Nofollow Reciprocity - Detects nofollow links, if you link to a site and it is nofollow, your link to them also becomes nofollow.
- NoFollow Free - removes the nofollow attribute from blog comments and inserts an image band at the top of your pages with the phrase: “NoFollow Free” (optional).
- Dofollow - Simply install and activate, all nofollows are removed from comments and trackbacks.
- Dofollow (WP Plugin) - allows nofollows to be removed from comments, pingbacks and trackbacks but you can also set a comment age limit as well as have nofollow removed left by user type.

Andy Beard has a list of more nofollow plugins; including those for Blogger, TypePad and Moveable Type.

How Do I Add Nofollow?

For more control of your inbound and outbound links, you can add tag rel=”nofollow” within any html tag. See the original post for an example.

Does a link with nofollow count as a backlink?

Opinions vary on whether the nofollow attribute is completely discounted, or just given less relevance to the search engines. Keep in mind that how the search engines view nofollow may also vary. However, according to Google, that answer is no.

Why would I want to use nofollow on a link?

You might want to use nofollow on a link you don’t endorse, but has information you want to point to. On blog sites, you may want to give a nofollow link to spam comments and give credit to comments that are well thought out or contribute to your post.

You’ll get a small alert and next step will be to click on the “I’ll be careful, I promise!”

Now on the image you’ll see above you need to right click with the mouse and then New -> Boolean

Now you’ll have the New Bolean Value, you should type this:

Example:

click OK, and chose TRUE.
Now restart Firefox (close it and re-open)

The result: saving tons of memory and will make the browser faster.

Article Writing - SEO With the increasing use of so many great search engine optimization techniques to drive traffic to web sites, many people question whether or not the best web site traffic building tool is article writing.The problem may be that it seems to be too simple; driving lots of traffic to your site has got to be harder than just throwing together 300 or 400 words, then people read them and come visit your site, right?

The answer is yes and no. While slapping together 250 words is a start, you also want to make sure that you not only have enough content to keep the attention of users and grow your search engine rankings, but that your content is useful enough to keep your web visitors and potential customers coming back for more.

Article writing can help benefit your website greatly in many ways. Here are two:

1 - Getting Backlincks to Your Site

What are backlinks? They are the URL of your website (link) on some else’s site. It is also called a link pointing back to your website. The more sites that have backlinks, and the quality of the sites the links are on, heavily determine how far up your website ranks in the search engines.

One of the best and ethical ways of getting backlinks is to submit articles to article directories. This tactic is a great web site traffic building tool. You can get many backlinks to you sites in a short amount of time simply by writing articles and submitting them to free article directories. Just do a search for directory sites and info.

This will add to the number of hits to your website and it also might grab the attention of people who might be reading articles in a directory on other subjects and happen to run across yours, giving them information on just what your website is all about.

2 - Give You Web Content

Web content is another useful web site traffic building tool. Having enough keyword rich, useful content on your page is a great way to generate the attention of search engines and search engine users. IF you have something to say, your visitors are that much more likely to stay on your site for longer periods of time, attracting attention for your affiliate sales, etc,.

You can use article writing in many different ways to build traffic to a site. Just do a search and you will find hundreds of article directories that will allow you to submit your article with your link at the bottom. You will soon be addicted to this free way of getting great free traffic and then you will see why so many successful webmasters have used this as their top web site traffic building tool.

Authors love article submission directories. Don’t feel you can write good articles? It really is easier than you think, but you could also hire a ghostwriter. There are many places on the web to get this done for a reasonable price. Simply do a search.

Many web site owners are relying on the benefits of article writing for building reliable traffic and climbing up the search engine rankings. Don’t delay and get to typing up a few articles for your website today; submit them to directories and publish them on your web pages!

Any website requires working hard on its on-page optimization so as to achieve top organic ranking. A perfect SEO optimization may help the site to attain the top position in search engines and keep it out there for as long as it continues. Any website not only should look attractive but also should be appropriate for the crawlers and spiders.On page factors are directly related to the content and structure of the website. The tips to secure and organic on-page optimization is:

1. Meta Tags: Meta tags are one the most important feature of on-page optimization. These tags basically create the display text that the users will see when your site appears in search results. Meta tags should be search engine optimized and clear so as to appeal the visitors as well as web crawlers. The Meta tags should contain the targeted keywords so as to increase the search engine rankings. Optimized Meta tags improve the rate of click-through into your website.

2. Headers: Headers are the best way to describe a site. A proper and suitable header at the top of the main page may work wonders for the site. H1, H2, H3 tags are the best means to describe the site and maintain and promote the keywords and keyword density.

3. Keyword Density: Any website requires having some targeted keywords so as to target various sections of the visitors. Such targeted keywords must be uniformly spread throughout the webpage in a proper manner.

4. Images and Flash: Avoiding images, flash work and java script is a secure way for on-page optimization. Crawlers are unable to read such images and hence it is useless to define them. Thus the images should be optimized with ‘Alt Tag’. Thus alt tag should have well defined sentences and proper keywords.

5. Links: There should be absolutely no broken links in the site. Such links are really harmful for a site. The links should be always short. Crawlers do not identify long links.

6. URL Structure: The URL of any website should be in such a form that it directly related to the nature of the website or the content. Such URL`s basically helping the visitors to grasp a brief of what your site contains.

On-page optimization should always be done keeping in mind that your website needs to reach out for near and far web visitors so as to enhance your website. On-page optimization of any SEO services is also very much helpful in securing the loop holes in a website that cause problems in search engines. These tricks and tips will definitely help your website to attain a high ranking in all search engines if implemented properly and ensured with care.

Just Released: A New Top Secret Magic Code that when added to any site you have causes your site (or even any site) to magically start making money.

No joke. This discovery was made by a New York doctor who for the last 10 years used it secretly to do everything from offset his advertising costs, to just adding it to 1,000’s of webpages and amass a personal wealth now of nearly $100 million cash!

And now he’s decided to allow you and everyone else to share in it (and since he stands nothing more to gain by keeping “you” in the dark about it).

As it turns out, a number of the largest online firms such as Alexa, and even a good number of the top 100 sites ranked on the entire Web are already using this amazing, but very simple secret.

Alexa, for instance, adds this top secret magic code to a number of their webpages and it allows them to automatically generate an “extra” $90,000 a month in profits - and thats just for a single webpage!

If you had 10 such pages that each did likewise, you’d “magically” get $900,000 every 30 days just poured into your pocket!

And most important: You should instantly recognize the fact that since a firm like Alexa (as well as about 34% of the Web’s top 100 sites) is using this, then you too should be using it.

But here’s what may SHOCK you the absolute very most …

o It takes you just 45 seconds to add this top secret magic code to any webpage

o Once added you do NOTHING further - but money just starts pouring in!

And remember …

Just in case you think this isn’t for real, firms like Alexa and others in the top 100 wouldn’t be using it (but they are; so what does that tell you?)

If you are wise and want to make your webpages pay you money automatically simply by adding just a simple string of 1-line top secret magic code to any webpage, then you may want to begin using this immediately.

Why the need to RUSH?

The guy giving this out is letting just about another 500 to maybe 600 people at best find out about this, and then he’s deliberately going to “pull the rug out from underneath” anyone else trying to get it. So I hope you find this article in time!

I know, I know … That sounds very cruel and unfair.

But that’s his doing; so rather than argue with him it would probably just be a better idea to just go there and grab it so that at least “you” don’t get left out in the rain.

But fair warning, in case you stumble upon this too late, just don’t be shocked to see it’s no longer available.

With faster machines cropping up almost daily, the life span of a midrange PC is a little more than two years of service. Physically, the computer you bought a few years ago is just as sound as any new piece of hardware. Ideally, it could probably last you a decade or two–as long as you didn’t add any new software or surf the Net. Realistically, that’s not likely to be the case. Instead of buying a new computer, optimize your present one. The following are 11 things that Chip Manufacturers and PC Retailers don’t want you to know or how to perform. Following these advices will drastically increase your PC performance and help you regain your sanity while saving loads of money. And, if your PC is years old and can’t afford to upgrade yet, you will be able to squeeze out some more juice out of the old thing!

1. Disable file indexing.
This is a tiny service that uses a great deal of RAM and induces much disk thrashing. Your system instantly becomes more responsive. Here’s how: First, doubleclick the My Computer icon. Then, right-click on the C: Drive, then hit Properties. Uncheck “Allow Indexing Service to index this disk for fast file searching.” Next, apply changes to “C: subfolders and files,” and click OK.

2. Zap the Windows Prefetch folder every week.

Windows XP can “prefetch” portions of data and applications that are frequently loaded. This allows processes appear to start faster when requested the user. Over time, the prefetch folder overwhelms with references to files and applications no longer in use. Guess what happens? Windows XP wastes time and grinds to a halt by pre-loading obsolete data. It helps you gain some performance on your XP Professional to periodically empty the prefetch folder.

The prefetch folder resides on your local hard disk, under the Windows folder.

%systemroot%\prefetch

-or-

X:\windows\prefetch

Where X is the drive letter where you have Windows installed. Either path will get you to your local system. The second path is for those who have the default installation on the most commonly used drive letter, C:\

3. Optimise Display Settings.

Windows XP can look sexy but displaying all the visual items can waste system resources. Kill unnecessary animations, and nix active desktop. Here’s how to do it:

1) Go to Start

2) Click Settings

3) Click Control Panel

4) Click System

5) Click Advanced tab

6) In the Performance tab click Settings

7) Leave only the following ticked:

(1) Show shadows under menus

(2) Show shadows under mouse pointer

(3) Show translucent selection rectangle

(4) Use drop shadows for icons labels on the desktop

(5) Use visual styles on windows and buttons

Feel free to play around with the options offered here, as nothing you can change will alter the stability of the computer - only its responsiveness.

4. Remove the Desktop Picture
Your desktop background consumes a fair amount of memory and can slow the loading time of your system. Removing it will improve performance.

1) Right click on Desktop and select Properties

2) Select the Desktop tab

3) In the Background window select None

4) Click Ok

5. Remove Fonts for Speed
Zap extra fonts fonts installed on their computer. Fonts, especially TrueType fonts, use quite a bit of system resources. The more fonts they have, the more lethargic the system will become. Anything over 300 fonts tax the system and slow down load times- especially graphic apps. For optimal performance, trim your fonts down to just those that you need to use on a daily basis and fonts that applications may require.

1) Open Control Panel

2) Open Fonts folder

3) Move fonts you don’t need to a temporary directory (e.g. C:\FONTBKUP?) just in case you need or want to bring a few of them back. The more fonts you uninstall, the more system resources you will gain.

6. Speedup Folder Browsing

You may have noticed that everytime you open my computer to browse folders that there is a slight delay. This is because Windows XP automatically searches for network files and printers everytime you open Windows Explorer. To fix this and to increase browsing significantly:

1) Open My Computer

2) Click on Tools menu

3) Click on Folder Options

4) Click on the View tab.

5) Uncheck the Automatically search for network folders and printers check box

6) Click Apply

7) Click Ok

 Reboot your computer

To prevent a single Windows Explorer window tanking up takes the rest of your OS down, you can launch separate folder windows in multi processes. Open My Computer, hit on Tools, then Folder Options. Click on the View tab. Scroll down to “Launch folder windows in a separate process,” and enable this option.

7. Disable Performance Counters
Windows XP has a performance monitor utility which monitors several areas of your PC’s performance. These utilities take up system resources so disabling is a good idea. To disable:

1) download and install the Extensible Performance Counter List

2) Then select each counter in turn in the ‘Extensible performance counters’ window and clear the ‘performance counters enabled’ checkbox at the bottom button below

8. Optimise Your Pagefile
Windows XP sizes the page file to about 1.5X the amount of actual physical memory by default. While this is good for systems with smaller amounts of memory (under 512MB) it is unlikely that a typical XP desktop system will ever need 1.5 X 512MB or more of virtual memory. If you have less than 512MB of memory, leave the page file at its default size. If you have 512MB or more, change the ratio to 1:1 page file size to physical memory size.

1) Right click on My Computer and select Properties

2) Select the Advanced tab

3) Under Performance choose the Settings button

4) Select the Advanced tab again and under Virtual Memory select Change

5) Highlight the drive containing your page file and make the initial Size of the file the same as the Maximum Size of the file.

9. Improve Memory Usage
PC Washer improves the performance of your computer by optimizing the disk cache, memory and a number of other settings.

Once Installed:

1) Click the ‘Tools’ from the left menu

2) Select ‘Memory Booster’ in the tools list. A new window named ‘PC Turbo Memory’ will popup.

3) Click Defragment button in the new window.

4) Exit the program. That’s all.

10. Disable unnecessary services
Windows XP loads services you will never need. To determine which services you can disable for your client, visit the Black Viper site for ideal Windows XP configurations. Here are a few services I booted off to streamline my PC:

* Alerter

* Background Intelligent Transfer Service

* ClipBook

* Computer Browser

* Error Reporting Service

* Help and Support

* Indexing Service

* IPSEC Services

* Messenger

* NetMeeting Remote Desktop Sharing

* Network DDE

* Network DDE DSDM

* Performance Logs and Alerts

* Portable Media Serial Number

* QOS RSVP

* Help Session Manager

* Remote Registry

* Secondary Logon

* Server

* Smart Card

* Smart Card Helper

* SSDP Discovery Service

* System restore Service

* TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper

* Uninterruptible Power Supply

* Universal Plug and Play Device Host

* WebClient

* Windows time

* Wireless Zero Configuration

* WMI Performance Adapter

11. Disconnect USB devices you aren’t using.
When Windows starts, it must load all the drivers for the devices connected to your computer. If you have many devices connected to the USB ports, such as printers, scanners, cameras and hard drives that you don’t use on a regular basis, disconnect them. You can reconnect them when you use them. Disconnecting them when they are not in use will allow Windows to load the drivers only when needed.

The above steps should help increase the performance of Windows XP as well as keep it running with more stability.

Google has made a great launch in the first week of September for their customers, a really advanced web browser. This is named as Google Chrome by the search engine giants. There are various expectations about Chrome as Google had given it a different look and feel, unseen in all the existing and past web browsers.

Chrome is designed using the minimal design features, but with the best technology which makes the browser faster and safer for the users. Google has developed Chrome using the open source code, which makes Google chrome unique among its competitors.

The browser version launched by Google is the beta version. Google has declared that, they are planning to add values to their users through a qualified browser. This browser is expected to bring innovation on the internet.

The browser is made in a way that, users feel they are using a tool which will run pages, websites and applications. The initial reactions do include criticism in regards to its security flaws.

There were various goals and targets set by Google about chrome, even before its introduction in the market. The main goals were considered to be security, stability and quickness of execution. The user interface was changed in a way that makes Google chrome, easier for handling.

Google chrome takes much care and attention to make the browser highly secure for use by their customers. They have made use of blacklists that have the lists of malware websites. This will help them to warn their users of any attempt made by them to reach harmful sites.

Speed of chrome is another main aspect where Google has given complete concentration during the development. The implementation is made in a way that is suitable for the small programs, which is not that particular about the performance as well as interactivity of the system. At the same time, advanced applications can very well get maximum benefit out of the way in which Google chrome has been designed. Google chrome incognito is one feature you’d like to look into.

Stability of Google chrome has already received great appreciation from customers. The task manager facility provided by Google chrome is intended at helping users to observe the sites which have more memory usage along with downloading of more bytes. You can also notice the sites which are abusing CPU.

You can get easy to handle interface allowing you to make use of the back, forward, refresh and other simple facilities provided by Google chrome. The tab bar is situated under the title bar, in the minimized state.

You can also create shortcuts in your desktop for the web applications provided by the Google chrome web browser. This will not interrupt the way the user works, since the regular interface will not be available when the browser is opened using this feature.

At the same time, Google has received some security flaws which are criticized by opponents within this short time span.

With Google chrome, web becomes more advanced and special. Users will have a different web browsing experience as they use this browser. The users of chrome will surely have a unique and distinct feeling as they continue to use this new browser of Google. The whole community using Google chrome will help in taking the web forward.

Browsing the web you will see that a lot of sites have no content, they are parked and for sale. Others have very good content but they are also for sale. Why do people do this? Why they register domains or buy websites, and sell them after? Well, because www is very similar to real estate!

There are brokers who will help you sell your site or domain and they earn pretty well! If you are new into this kind of business, domain brokers are a good resource for selling premium domain names. A good domain broker has contacts at large companies in the industry for your domain. For example, if your domain is about some sort of software then your broker should have contacts at software companies.

Most of the people who sell websites or domains do not need brokers because there are a lot of free resources on the web. In this article I will give you a general idea about how and where to sell your site/domain.

So, you decided to sell your website or domain?

Great! But when the first customer will come and ask you how much you want for it what are you going to tell? Are you sure that your asking price is the right one? In order to come up with the right price you have to know what you sell.

One of the places where you can find out a lot of information about your site is Foco.us. There is a domain evaluation tool that will give you useful information like:

- Google and Alexa Rank
- Domain Age
- Backlinks
- Indexed Pages
- Social bookmarks
- Directories Listing
- Traffic stats
- Domain whois

Based on all these free information you can compare your site to others and come up with a price. When selling a website PageRank can be very important, that is why you should improve your pagerank continuously. Domain age is also important because older pages tend to rank better in search engines and usually have better rate of visitor returns. Backlinks are a great source of promotion and PageRank improvement. It might be a good idea to contact fellow webmasters and exchange links. The number if pages indexed by search engines is not that important but if you have a lot of content it might be! Also, more and more sites are using social bookmarking sites for promoting (most of them spaming about) their sites. This is not such a good idea. Social bookmark sites, like Digg for instance, will bring you some visitors but in most of the cases they will not click on ads or buy stuff you are selling on the site. I recommend using social bookmarking only if you want to inflate your visitors number.

Another thing that you have to know before going out to sell your website is that people will ask for traffic/visitors stats and proof of your earnings with that site.

Now that you have a general idea about what you sell and managed to come up with the right price, you are ready to list your site on the market.

You can list your site on forums and websites. One of the most popular places to sell websites is DigitalPoint’s forum. Listing is free and the forum is popular.

You can also list your site for sale on websites like WebDomainsBroker.com. That site is also very popular and offers you the option to promote your listing on their homepage for only $10! Go give it a try!

All in all, if you are selling, sell something valuable. Build up some content, promote it a bit and sell it after. Don`t ask for to much! If you bought a domain for $10 and someone is giving you $50 for it, consider selling! Yes, you could maybe sell it for more, but it is better to let the money flow. It will help build up your business and your psychological energy!

Don`t forget: Even a small amount of money that came out of a sell is a victory!

Resources:
It is 100% free!
Free domain evaluation tool

Search engine optimization is simply the term used to describe the process of proactively working to have your website show up for a certain keyword phrase when someone does a search online.

The idea is to bring those searchers to your website because they are the group of people that are most interested in your product or service online. The first thing to consider when you want to begin search engine optimization is to ask yourself, what “keyword phrase” do I want my website to show up on the first page of the search engines when someone does a search online.

Once you have picked out this search term you want to include this term in the “title tag” of your webpage. The title tag simply tells search engines what the title of that webpage is so that it helps to index your webpage. Most programs that you will use to design your website will tell you where to enter the title tag when designing your website. If you are having a professional do it for you then you want to tell them the title tag you want to use.

Once you have finished with the title tag the next thing would be the description of the webpage, you want to make sure this is relevant and has keywords that are related or help describe your title tag.

The next very important component of your website would be content, your content is what search engine users are after when they search using the engines. The big players in search know this so you must provide unique content preferable on a regular basis to rank well with the search engines.

I wasted 17 months trying to drive profitable traffic to my website, but you should not do the same.

SEO Price Quotes - Don’t Pay More Than You Should
By Matthew Lord

SEO services are alive and well all across the internet. It is easy to find some SEO firms that want to charge you $5,000 a month, and some that charge $9.95. Quite a gap isn’t it? SEO price quotes are among the widest array of price ranges in any market. So with that said, what SEO price is right for you?

When evaluating SEO services it is important to consider just exactly what you are getting for the price. For example, a $5,000 firm may give you all of the bells and whistles, it sounds nice, but only major corporations would ever need such quality SEO service. On the other hand some services charging $9.95 will simply optimize every site the same way. This of course does not work because every site and every webmaster has different goals with their website or business.

So when looking at SEO price quotes: What should you pay? My personal theory is that SEO services are overrated. Many people have bought software for $150-200 and are getting better results than the people who spend thousands of dollars each month. Now I don’t want to bad mouth the high end SEO firms, they are great, but you just don’t need them.

When evaluating SEO price quotes it is always safe to stay around the $200 mark. For this price you can get great, in depth software that will solve all the needs for the average online business. Unless you make over $250,000 per year, don’t bother with the $5,000 SEO price.

So in conclusion keep your spending relatively conservative. Your extra $1,000’s can be better served somewhere else when evaluating SEO price quotes.
